Chasing the Sun

Writer's picture: Maria N. ListmanMaria N. Listman

I was snuggled into a cushy patch of grass in my backyard, leaning into a sun ray. My jacket was strewn haphazardly around my  shoulders, daring the wind to mess with me.

I don’t like the cold. At all.

But, I value my time outdoors.

I tilt my head to the left after I hear a faint “meow” to see Amos sauntering over.

He’s our outdoor rescue kitty - the cool cat.

As always, he rubs against my jacket and flops down - belly up - eager to feel the sun kiss his fur. He squints, licks his paw and wiggles into the grass.

We stay in that exact position until I can’t feel my fingers anymore. Not wanting to go in, I pan the area and find a new spot for us to sit.

Off to the side, we have rows of logs that need splitting. My husband has been working away at it, bit-by-bit.

I ease myself on top of a log, and my backyard buddy hops up right beside me.

We both keep our faces to the sun, feeling it’s comforting warmth on our cheeks.

I could geek out and discuss the importance of sunlight in your eyes first thing in the morning to regulate your circadian rhythm. Or how Vitamin D is a hormone and we need it.

But, let’s keep it simple.

Flowers always grow towards the light. Animals always lay in the sunshine - even indoors. And we are no different. We need a daily dose of sunshine to feel our best.

As the weather shifts into cooler months, this is your loving reminder to get outside.

The sun is a gift to us. Receive it.

Like my furry friend, Amos.

Energy, vitality, a better night’s sleep and more are outside your door.

Be smart - don’t get burned - and chase the sun!
