Summertime in Maryland - its tradition for many families to head over to the shore. Passing miles of corn fields and produce stands along Route 50, to reach their final destination of sunshine and salty air.

One local family has teamed up with eastern shore farmers to bring their best produce straight to us western shore folks, at the convenient location of 1025 MD Route 3 N in Gambrills. Amongst the hustle of shopping centers and homes, sits a lovely corner lot of farm fresh delight. If you've driven down Route 3, you know this place. It's a local treasure.
Crofton Southbound Produce was established in 1975 and has been in this location for over twenty years. They've provided the community with Christmas trees during this time and have added produce, local honey, sauces, flowers and more for the past six years. Lindsey Billings and her husband, John, inherited the business from family and are open seven days a week. Nearly every product they sell is from Maryland.

I was fascinated with their selection of melons, so I asked Lindsey how to pick the best one.

"We have our customers knock or thump on the melon. You are looking for a hollow sound. If it sounds flat, like slapping your forearm, it tends to be overripe."
They currently offer Texas yellow meat watermelons, canary melons, sugar babies, watermelon and cantaloupe. We brought home a Texas yellow and canary melon since we hadn't tried them before.
They were devoured in minutes.
